2) Enjoy Mesmerizing Downtown Norfolk Fireworks At Town Point Park

Looking for 4th of July fireworks Norfolk visitors can enjoy that are free and open to the public? For more than four decades, the 4th of July Great American Picnic and Fireworks celebration has taken place on July 4th at Town Point Park near the Otter Berth cruise terminal on the downtown Norfolk waterfront. The event kicks off each year at 5 p.m. The famous Town Point Park fireworks display is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m.

Grab a spot on the lawn early! Attendees can enjoy a blend of all American fare that includes burgers, hot dogs, seafood, cotton candy, and more for a small fee. The event also features live musical entertainment from military brass bands. Of course, the fireworks show is the highlight that brings crowds out. Town Point Park fireworks are set off high above the moonlit Elizabeth River for a Fourth of July experience you’ll never forget!

Good To Know: While it’s fine to bring a blanket or some camping chairs to get comfy for the fireworks show, all tents, large umbrellas, and shade structures are forbidden.

3) Attend The South Norfolk July 4th Parade And Picnic In The Park

Head to Lakeside Park in nearby Chesapeake, just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk, to enjoy music, hot dogs, seafood, cotton candy, and more. The South Norfolk July 4th Parade and Picnic in the Park kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m.

We recommend arriving by 9 a.m. to get a good spot. This iconic, truly American parade is led by the color guard. Observers will also enjoy ornate floats, new and classic cars, dance groups, marching bands, and much more!

The celebration at Lakeside Park immediately follows the conclusion of the South Norfolk parade. Following the opening ceremony, you can enjoy food and fanfare while listening to a live acoustic guitarist and other musical performances.

Pro Tip: Bring cash! While entry to this event is free, many activities charge a small fee as part of fundraising efforts for local organizations and Chesapeake parks.

4) Enjoy A Relaxing Beach Day At One Of The Ocean View Beaches

Head to Norfolk’s best beach neighborhood for a beach day at Ocean View! Norfolk’s Ocean View neighborhood boasts more than 7.3 miles of free, accessible shoreline along the glistening Chesapeake Bay.

Managed by the Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation, local beach parks are pristinely maintained to offer parking, restrooms, benches, shade trees, and other amenities that will make your July visit perfect.

Choose from the following three beaches:

  • Ocean View Beach Park – The crown jewel of Ocean View features 6.5 miles of coastline with a gorgeous boardwalk and music bandshell for summer concerts. It’s also Norfolk’s only beach with lifeguards on duty throughout July.

  • Sarah Constant Beach Park – Perfect for picnicking, this white-sand beach offers calm waters ideal for swimming.

  • Community Beach Park – Families love this relaxing spot, which welcomes dogs and features tree-shaded areas perfect for cooling off.

Pro Tip: Consider planning a 4th of July BBQ on your own by picking up some burgers, hot dogs, or your favorite seafood at a local grocery store. Grilling is allowed on the grass areas of Community Beach Park and Sarah Constant Park Beach.

5) Explore The Historic Sites And Maritime Wonders Along The Elizabeth River Trail

If you’re looking for a self-guided tour, there’s no better spot than the Elizabeth River Trail that runs along the Norfolk waterfront. Conveniently located next to the cruise port near Otter Berth that most of the city cruises depart from, the Elizabeth River Trail offers scenic views with a sense of excitement in the air. Choose only the parts you want to see for a quick tour.

Here’s what you need to know before hopping on:

  • Finished in 2003, the Elizabeth River Trail has connected segments of Norfolk’s working waterfront with scenic routes dotted with historic landmarks. It serves as a waterfront sanctuary!

  • The trail is significant because it actually connects 28 different Norfolk neighborhoods.
